Why Use A Marathon Pace Calculator?

The main reason runners use a marathon pace calculator is to find out how fast they need to run in order to achieve their race finish time goal.

For example, if your goal is to run a marathon in under 4 hours, you would use the pace calculator to determine the pace you need to run in order to achieve that goal.

So if your pace during training has been consistently 9:00 minutes per mile, entering that time into the calculator would show that at a 9:00 per mile pace, your marathon finish time would be 3:55:58 -- comfortably under your sub-4 hour goal!

The pace calculator also makes it easy to play around with different paces to see how they impact your overall time. Just seeing the difference in finish times between a 7:50 and 8:00 pace per mile marathon time can give you perspective on the impact of raising or lowering your marathon pace.

How To Calculate Your Running Pace

To calculate your running pace, use this formula:

Pace = Time / Distance
Stated another way, divide your run time in minutes by the distance.

Here are a few examples:

  • If you ran for one hour (60 minutes) and went 6 miles, your pace is 60 ÷ 6 = 10:00 minute mile.
  • If you ran a 5K (3.1 miles) in 30 minutes, your pace is 30 ÷ 5 = 6 min per kilometer.
  • If you ran a half marathon (13.11 miles) in 2 hours, your pace is 120 ÷ 13.11 = 9:15 minute mile.
  • If you ran a marathon (26.22 miles) in 4 hours, your pace is 240 ÷ 26.22 = 9:15 minute mile.
